Founded in 1832, the museum, situated in the midst of a vast botanical garden, offers an extensive collection of archeological and ethnographic artifacts (fossils, minerals, shells, and primitive statuettes) from 5 continents. Included in the exhibits are climate-controlled greenhouses containing tropical and desert plants and birds from around the world.

Tapisserie de Bayeux
Centre Guillaume le Conquérant Rue de Nesmond- Bayeux

The Bayeux tapestry is the only work of art of its kind in the world. This artifact depicts the battle of  Hastings lead by William the Conqueror in 1066. With outstanding detail, accounts of the battle are embroidered on a long piece of linen cloth (70m X 50cm). Audio guides are available in 11 languages.

MUSEE MARITIME DE L'ILE TATIHOU

This museum located on the small island of Tatihou ensures the conservation and the development of archaeological collections, including rare furniture from the wrecks of the Battle of Hougue in 1692. It also houses artifacts of anthropological significance (boats and antique fishing equipment used for fishing off the coast of Normandy). Maritime paintings are located in the museum’s gallery, and visits to the Tatihou fort  and grounds are all part in the experience.

 MUSEE DE LA GLACERIE

As part of this museums permanent exhibits, one finds delicate pieces of mirrored glass fabricated  for French royalty and manufactured in the Mirror Factory created by Colbert in 1667. One finds, as well, a large collection of lace bonnets  and caps typical to the region of Normandy.

Museum “Remembering things from the past”

MAISON NATALE DE JEAN-FRANCOIS MILLET

This Master of the Barbazon school was born in 1814 in the Gruchy Hameau just outside of Cherbourg, France.  This site shows the childhood home of the painter whose career was spent depicting the rural life of French laborers.

MAISON DE JACQUES PREVERT

The house of  Jacques Prévert is located in the heart of  La Hague where the poet lived until 1977.  There one finds his workshop preserved in its original state as well as several of his personal documents on display.  The ground floor exhibits works by artist who worked with or influenced the artist.

LE TOURP
Omonville la Rogue

This 15th century manor houses a permanent exhibit entitled “ The Hague from all points of View” as well as may temporary exhibits. One experiences the ancient architecture of this historic building, including the chapel, the bakery and the pigeon roost. A photo exhibit tells the centuries old story of the manor.

This unique museum explores the history of the unloading of American troops in the sector of Utah Beach. It houses a beautiful collection of military material, including: models, photographs, war machines and elements of defense, and film in English, German and French- Guided tours in English and French- Panoramic sight of the site to the Point of Hoc.

History

Historic Places from the Battle Of Normandy

A veritable open-air museum, the historical area of the Battle of Normandy brings together all museums and places of interest and remembrance connected with D-Day and the ensuing offensive in the three departments of Calvados, Manche and Orne.

Eight itineraries in chronological sequence clearly signposted “Normandy Terre-Liberté”, enable to visit or to discover this history packed places and to follow the unfolding of this huge battle on which the outcome of Second World War depended.

Overlord-l’Assaut (the Onslaught): 70 km from Pegasus Bridge to Bayeux via Sword, Juno and Gold Beach.

The D-Day Landings (main sites)

The Pointe du Hoc: the symbol of the gallantry of the young Americans soldiers and one of the strongpoint of the German fortifications, the famous Pointe du Hoc was taken by storm by Colonel Rudder’s Ranger on the morning of 6th June.

The American Cemetery of Colleville: overlooking Omaha Beach, the American cemetery contains 9.387 perfectly aligned white crosses on a 170-acre plot, which is conducive to meditation and remembrance. A chapel and a memorial add the finishing to this moving scene.

The Battery of Longues sur Mer: this German artillery battery, which gave the Allied ships a pounding on the morning of 6th June, is the only coastal battery to have kept its guns, giving an impressive picture of what an Atlantic Wall gun emplacement was really like.
